Building Regulations amendments implementing the Future Homes and Buildings Standards generally come into force on 24 March 2027 in England, with specific different timing for certain higher-risk building provisions and transitional arrangements for projects already under way. They increase requirements around low-carbon heating, energy efficiency and building services in new homes and non-domestic buildings.
Why an electrical contractor should care about a heating standard
Because low-carbon heating is an electrical load. As heat pumps and electrified building services displace gas, the electrical package on a project grows: supply capacity, distribution, protection, controls, commissioning and metering all expand in scope. Buildings designed around electrification carry more electrical infrastructure, more controls integration and more commissioning evidence than the ones they replace.

Developers, contractors and consultants do not wait for a commencement date to work out who can deliver. Pre-construction planning, framework appointments and supply-chain qualification happen months ahead. The commercial implication for a contracting business is simple: visibility and vetted status need to exist before the market starts allocating the work, not after.
