Amendment 4 to BS 7671 includes dedicated Power over Ethernet content. On its own that is a technical detail. Read alongside what is actually being installed in commercial buildings, it marks a change in the boundary of the electrical contractor's role.
Convergence is the story
Systems that were once separately procured now share cabling, power and data infrastructure: LED lighting and lighting control, occupancy and environmental sensing, access control and door entry, CCTV, ANPR, energy metering, HVAC controls and building management systems. Increasingly they are commissioned as one estate of connected devices rather than as unrelated packages.
That has consequences on site. Data cabling carries meaningful power. Bundling, containment and heat need thought. Segregation, labelling and documentation matter more, not less, because the person maintaining the building in five years needs to understand what feeds what.
Why property and facilities teams care
A facilities or property manager rarely wants to arbitrate between an electrical contractor, a data installer and a controls specialist when a floor's lighting and sensors stop responding. Suppliers who understand how the systems interact reduce that burden — and they are the ones who get called back for the next phase.
